Many times I’ve found how easy it is to forget why we do what we do. I can get excited about an idea, a project, an event…you name it. After a little time, discouragement, self-consciousness, doubt, or just plain life….becomes distraction…and I forget or become discouraged and quit. My focus turns back.to.me – forgetting the bigger picture of what it was that got me going in the first place!
One example, nearly 15 years ago – or so – I was reading beside the pool while my kids were at their swim lessons. Summers were great for me to catch up on my ‘just-for-fun’ reading not related to home school curriculum. The library became my best friend over those summer days, and that is when I came upon a particular book, A Mother’ Ordeal, One Woman’s Fight Against China’s One-Child Policy.
My curiosity of culture is high – and, at that time China was particularly foreign to me. I knew no Chinese people, let alone understood their culture. My generation grew up knowing more about the Bamboo Curtain, than the people who lived there.
So, this title caught my eye. As I’m seated in my poolside recliner, I’m devouring each page, envisioning transitions within my own life time leap off the pages:
The Great Leap Forward
The Cultural Revolution
The One-Child Policy
Every page holding me captive. The woman in the story was near my own age. Where was I when these events occurred? Her world so vastly different.
Before I realized it, a seed was planted.
And, as life does….summer ended, and my attention returned to the raising of our family. Interest in China was put on the back burner…on simmer.
The seed took root. And, here I am – going to China.
In Isaiah, there it is, tucked away in the middle…
“How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of him who brings good news,
who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness,
who publishes salvation,
who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.'”
The Woman’s Ordeal, the story of China, became my launching pad. The published work opened an unexpected door for us to walk through. It piqued my interest in preparation to bring good news of happiness and salvation to a people hungry for meaning and answers.
Nothing is an accident. God is intentional.
Are we listening?
How has God used unexpected methods to prepare you for the unexpected?
