A true story beginning in Farm-town, USA, where Nik Ripkin recounts specific events of his youth. More specifically, a particular Easter Sunday. A story that leads to life least imagined.
Nik Ripkin grew up in hard working farm country. Family, work and education were his world. He didn’t know much about God, although his parents would often drop he and his siblings at the local church for weekly Sunday School and church services.
Until one Easter Sunday, when Nik was just 11 years old.
The Ripkin family arrived at church to find it packed. Every seat was nearly taken, so the family had to split up. Nik slipped into a single spot at the end of a pew near the front. Immediately he was drawn into the events of that unique Sunday service.
Taking everything in, he was enthralled by the choir’s celebration in song. There was a real soaring in his spirit that lingered through the pastor’s telling of the Easter story. It was then, for the first time, he heard the story. The young boy could see in his mind and feel in his heart those final days of Jesus with his disciples. Each stage Nik could see vividly, as if he were right there with Jesus.
The story of Jesus’ last hours.
The story of Jesus with His disciples during that holy Passover week.
The story where there was love and closeness between these men at the Last Supper.
The story of great sadness, disappointment, grief, and fear in the garden.
The story of outrage over the mistreatment of Jesus in the course of His trial and His execution.
The story of deep despair at the crucifixion and placing Jesus in the tomb.
But, in the morning….
The tomb is open, the stone is rolled away.
The angel…and…the empty tomb.
Christ is risen, He is risen, indeed!
Nik, understood for the first time. He could hardly contain himself with excitement. The boy wanted to jump up and shout, “Hooray!” Yet, as he glanced around, children were drawing or doodling. Adults sat attentively, but no different than any other Sunday. He wondered…
Has this Easter become…just a story? Have we, too, become complacent and no longer excited about the Good News of Christ?
Now is the time for Faith Resurrected.
